2.4 Bangkok: Tips

  • Try and put Bangkok at the end of itineraries. Bangkok is an amazing big bustling city, with endless choices for shopping, nightlife and exploring. Once travellers have acclimatised to the Thai culture and the fast pace of Bangkok they can discover the shopping malls and markets and not have to carry around their purchases to other destinations.
  • Bangkok has a great number of cultural landmarks to see that are easily reached by tuk-tuk, taxi or boat services along the river. The BTS Skytrain and Metro are also efficient and easy to use.
  • An authentic Thai dinner in a local restaurant or at street stalls is a must-do. There's a huge range of options, including the aptly named 'Cabbages and Condoms' - a restaurant decorated with, yes you guessed it, condoms - which combines great food with a sexual health message.
  • A longtail boat trip on the klongs (canals) to experience the 'Venice of the Far East', with winding waterways and a plethora of marketplaces to see along the way.
  • The mainland resorts of Pattaya, Hua Hin and Cha Am are close to Bangkok and good for stopover clients or families who want to avoid long transfers. Hua Hin is especially convenient, being just a three-hour drive from the capital. The resorts of Koh Samui and Phuket are also a short flight away.
