7.4 Mae Lana Village, Mae Hong Son

Nestled in a valley surrounded by the lush hills of Mae Hong Song's Pang Mapha district, Mae Lana villagers open their homes for visitors to learn about Thai culture. The ethnic Thai Yai (Shan) Buddhist community continues its ancestors' way of life. Tourists can learn about weaving and rice cultivation and join in activities in the paddy fields. Trekking a forest trail to the nearby Mae Lana cave is a must. The area is home to one of the longest caves in Asia stretching for 12 kilometres. After trekking, nothing can beat winding down in a herbal Thai medicinal sauna followed by a massage. In the evening, you can enjoy a traditional performance by the village's youth group.

Mae Lana Village is 18 kms from Soppong which is some four and a half hours from Chiang Mai and is accessible by bus, minibus or motorbike.
