5.11 Krabi: Things to do

  • Belonging to the National Marine Park, the four beautiful islands of the Koh Hong group can be reached within 20 minutes from Ao Nang by speedboat, or 45 minutes by longtail. They can also be reached on a day trip from Phuket. The main island, Koh Hong is uninhabited, except for the birds, white-faced gibbons and giant monitor lizards sometimes seen on the main white sand beach. Koh Lahding is another beautiful island with a sheltered cove while further north, both Koh Pakbia and Koh Rai have impressive sandbars at low tide. Snorkelling is also available. Tours often offer a picnic lunch on the main island of Koh Hong and a kayak tour around the coastline is a great way to enjoy the stunning scenery.
  • The famous Phi Phi Islands can be visited on day trips from Phuket, Ko Lanta, and Krabi via either a speedboat or express ferry, and typically cover Phi Phi highlights such as Maya Bay, Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, Viking Cave, and James Bond Island in Phang Nga National Park.
  • Participating in a Thai cooking class is a great way to spend the day. Krabi has some fantastic cooking schools and all classes are hands-on, encouraging you to practice Thai cooking techniques. Often the class involves a trip to a local market to pick the fresh ingredients.
  • The town of Krabi has great night-markets for clients to enjoy and during the day visitors flock to the nearby Tiger Cave Temple and its mountain-top shrine which offers spectacular views. Visitors to Krabi can book onto a kayaking excursion through the mangroves, spotting crabs, monkeys and birdlife and stopping off to explore deserted beaches and caves with prehistoric paintings.
  • Take a longtail boat to one of the many secluded bays and surrounding islands.
  • For adrenaline junkies there is rock climbing and abseiling, hang gliding, scuba diving and white water rafting.
