The ancient city of Sukhothai Kamphaeng Phet and Si Satchanalai was home to the legendary Kingdom of Sukhothai in 1238. Today, much of its impressive architecture still stands:
- Sukhothai was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
- The site has numerous temples and Buddhist monasteries. The city walls form a rectangle about 2 km east-west by 1.6 km north-south. There are 193 ruins on 70 square kilometres of land.
- Si Satchanalai was known for its ceramic export industry.
- Sukhothai is a six-hour drive from Bangkok by car, or seven hours by bus. There is also a train station 50km from the city. The easiest way to access Sukhothai is by air. Bangkok Airways operates a one-hour daily flight from Bangkok to Sukhothai.
- An ancient capital of Thailand, Sukhothai’s temples are easy to explore by bike or foot.
