2.6 Ancient Cities Ayutthaya

Over 500 years old, Ayutthaya was the capital city of Thailand for 417 years and was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991:

  • During the period when Ayutthaya was capital, 33 kings and several dynasties ruled until it was invaded by the Burmese army in 1767.
  • As one of the most prosperous cities in South East Asia, Ayutthaya has three palaces: The Grand Palace, Chankasem Palace or the Front Palace, and Wang Lang or the Rear Palace.
  • Easily accessible as a day trip from Bangkok, there are a few ways to get to Ayutthaya: rail, bus, minivan, car or via traditional rice barge cruise down the Chao Phraya River.
  • Bicycling is a popular way to get around the ruins. The paths are paved and the distances between temples are small.
  • Also close-by and reachable by bike (as long as the biker is confident sharing the roads with the speedy Thai traffic), are sites such as a floating market.
